Combining Clay, Wood and Metal.  Imagine.

Combining Clay, Wood and Metal.  Imagine.

When the flicker of London sun falls faint on the Club-room's green and gold,

The sons of Adam sit them down and scratch with their pens in the mould --

They scratch with their pens in the mould of their graves, and the ink and the anguish start,

For the Devil mutters behind the leaves:  "It's pretty, but is it Art?"

I spent two years writing and compiling the contents of The Extruder Book. It was published in 2000 and it is still widely available.  Now, nine years later, I’m starting a new book, The Slab Roller Book. It will be loaded with projects that start with  simple slabs of clay.  The book will also feature a gallery of “slab roller art” contributed by people from all over the U.S. and Canada. Look for The Slab Roller Book in late 2011.

The Extruder Book is available from a number of pottery book sellers. Amazon.com carries it and you can click the photo to connect with The Ceramic Arts Bookstore.

I am very proud to say that I contributed to this book by Barry Hall. Barry and I collaborated on this for two years. I worked on the captions for the gallery photos and I did several of the how-to demonstrations. If you have any interest in ceramic music instruments, From Mud To Music is a must-have.

Extruder, Mold & Tile contains several articles that originally appeared on the pages of Pottery Making Illustrated magazine. One of my early articles on making extruded boxes is included. E,M&T is one in a series of excellent how-to books offered by The American Ceramic Society.

Now and then I’m overcome by the urge to make a teapot or two. These design are made almost entirely from extruded clay.

Ceramic Art Innovative Techniques is another compilation book published by The American Ceramic Society. Among the twenty-five techniques shown, I demonstrate how to make extruder dies from old credit cards. The article includes step-by-step instructions for making an address sign from stoneware clay.
